YUSUF CACHALIA

Plans are already under way to eject and displace 10,000 Indians now living in the city. About 5,000 will be thrown out from Sophiatown, Martindale and Newcastle under the removal scheme of Dr. Verwoed. Another 5,000 now living in Vrededorp face a similar fate. This is made clear by the application of Section 14 of the Group Areas Act there. Its application means that the Minister of the Interior is desirous of changing the racial character of Vrededorp, and, therefore, in terms of the Section, no new buildings may be occupied by Indians without the authority of a permit. These Indians, together with all others who live and trade in different parts of Johannesburg will, in time to come, be forced out of the city. It is obvious that they will be forced into the ghettoes of Lenz.
