MANDANJIT VIYAVAHA RIK

The first Indian-owned printing press in South Africa, called the International Printing Press, was started by Madanjit Vyavaharik, a former Bombay school master, a few years before 1903. Gandhi had contributed a large proportion of its cost. In June, 1903 Madanjit (in nearly all contemporary writings, he was referred to by his first name possibly because of the length and difficulty of his surname), in consultation with Gandhi, and M. H. Nazar, an under-graduate of Bombay University and a trained journalist, decided to launch an Indian weekly, Indian Opinion. The paper was issued from 113 Grey Street, Durban. Its first editor was M. H. Nazar who acted as unpaid editor.
