El momento de las responsabilidades

Batalla decisiva por Radowitzky y la libertad

Hasta ahora la campaña por Radowitzky ha venido siendo sostenida por una corriente de simpatía y escaramuzas aisladas para substraerlo a la saña jurídica que lo enterró en las nieves fueguinas y en la siniestra frialdad carcelaria.

De la simpatía que goza el presidario poco se podría agregar ya. Las plazas de Buenos Aires, los rincones del país y los ámbitos mismos del mundo, a través de los océanos, desde Bogotá a Berlín, han irradiado las voces de encomio, de solidaridad y de simpatía por la obra y la conducta de Radowitzky.

Y en este concierto que ha llenado el mundo, ninguna voz responsable le ha sido adversa. ¿Quién se atreve a reprochar la eliminación de un monstruo, aunque éste se presente con figura humana? ¿Quién, en el fondo de su conciencia social, aprueba que los pueblos permanezcan impasibles y resignados ante el mandón brutal que unas veces engendra la política oligárquica, otras veces la política demagógica y algunas la soberbia del poderío militar? ¿Quién es el vil abyecto o el cínico logrero que puede adaptarse a vivir bajo la férula del que investido de poderío ilimitado arrasa todas las normas de convivencia social que las colectividades has adquirido con esfuerzo ingente en la marcha histórica?

El pensamiento humano tiene ya formadas sus sentencias para casos semejantes: los pueblos sin virilidad y sin conciencia de sus destinos con los que toleran el yugo de los déspotas.

A través de los siglos el juicio no le ha sido adverso, por sus virtudes cívicas, al clásico justiciero Bruto. Sin embargo el tirano caído bajo su puñal encarnaba brillantes condiciones personales. Había paseado do su gallardía y su genio por tres continentes. Triunfador de los campos y de los salones; de los galos y de Cleopatra. Diestro en la espada, en la pluma y en la verba. El mundo podía haber pedido cuentas a Bruto de la personalidad mental y artística que había destruido, y aún cargarle sobre el homicidio, el parricidio: pero el mundo siente demasiado bien que, por encima de todo, la salud de los pueblos está ha sido absuelto de las demás culpas.

En cambio ¿qué cuentas se le podían pedir a Radowitzky: qué virtudes, méritos o moralidades particulares lesionó con su acto? Si un visitante de Buenos Aires llega a cierta encrucijada y al encontrarse frente a un monumento interroga sobre las cualidades de aquel a quien se le ha destinado ¿qué podría responderle un interlocutor? Se trata de un soldado que ascendió a cierto grado militar apoyándose en el sable y doblando la cerviz, el cual en una ocasión en el parlamento, con un tropel de bomberos... y en otra ocasión en la plaza Lorea, frente a una manifestación pública... -- se le diría. ¡Y no se le podría hacer más que ese sangriento relato!

Felizmente todavía no se han acallado en el ambiente argentino las voces de Varela, Echeverría y Mármol en contra de la tiranía, ni las luces de Alberdi se han eclipsado por completo, y es posible recordar aquel principio que refleja la constitución en la parte que concede. O impone, a los ciudadanos el derecho de empuñar las armas para defender los mandatos constitucionales en varias ocasiones, sino que había violado el objeto de todos los mandatos, que es la vida humana, derramando la sangre de los que propendían a conservar y acrecentar las libertades públicas.

En la hora actual en que las tiranías torpes y desvergonzadas, que no tienen más motivo que el saqueo, desolan los espoleados países de América, los hombres que habitan este ricón del continente, donde las instituciones democráticas se aferran para no rodar al abismo dictatorial, todos, políticos, comerciantes y productores, deben comprender la trascendencia histórica del hecho de Radowitzky, que fue el que cercenó uno de los brazos vigorosos que la tiranía levantaba contra el pueblo, sin el cual posiblemente las instituciones hubieran llegado tan minadas a este período nefasto que ya las habría hecho rodar el empuje de los dictadores.

Trabajado el ambiente por la propaganda sostenida y ejercitadas las fuerzas en las escaramuzas libradas, estamos abocados a emprender una batalla decisiva. No es posible postergarla por más tiempo sin desprestigiar la obra realizada. Es el momento de la consecuencia y de las responsabilidades.

La libertad de Radowitzky envuelve la defensa de los ideales libertarios y de todos los caídos en las redes del privilegio.

Cuando el comité constituido en Rosario para los objetos de esta campaña, lanzó la iniciativa de huelga general para el 14 de noviembre, que también patrocinaba el comité de los gremios autónomos, nosotros hemos entrevisto la acción grandiosa que se puede llevar a efecto poniendo a contribución el cariño a que nos mueve el mártir. Como nosotros otras muchas entidades han prohijado la iniciativa, y no creemos que haya una sola que pueda substraerse al compromiso de esta lucha liberadora.

El tiempo que media hasta la fecha indicada es suficiente para hacer la agitación, o mejor dicho, para concitar las decisiones, ya que los ánimos están concitados.

Todas las instituciones, todos los hombres que abierta o íntimamente se han hecho eco de la campaña por Radowitzky han de dar muestras de la sinceridad de sus actitudes respondiendo al llamado que viene de los comités de Rosario. Esta iniciativa más que pertenecer a quienes la han formulado, estaba en el ambiente y pertenece a todos los que la han trabajado.

Sin embargo, advertimos que para dar forma a la iniciativa sería bueno que el comité pro Radowitzky de Buenos Aires dirigiera circular a todas las entidades capaces de intervenir en la lucha, o en su defecto que lo hicieran los comités de Rosario, pues no ha de ser Buenos Aires siempre el cerebro o el corazón impulsor de las campañas del país.

¡A trabajar, entonces, con sinceridad idealista por la próximas batalla!

The Moment for Responsibility

Decisive battle for Radowitzky and freedom

Until now the campaign against Radowitzky has been sustained by a stream of sympathy and isolated skirmishes to evade the weight of the snow that buried him in the Land of Fire and the coldly sinister prison.

To the sympathy that the prisoner enjoys, little could be added now. From the squares of Buenos Aires, the corners of the country and the same areas of the world, across oceans, from Bogota to Berlin radiated voices of praise, of solidarity and sympathy for the work and conduct of Radowitzky.

And in this agreement that has filled the world, not one responsible voice has opposed it. Who dares to criticize the removal of a monster, even if it is in human form? Who, in the depths of their conscience, approve of the people who remain indifferent and resigned before the brutal controller who has sometimes begets oligarchic politics, sometimes demagogic politics and sometimes pride of military power? Who is the vile outcast or the cynical profiteer that will adapt to live under the rule of those that invest in unlimited power to destroy all the social rules that the people have gathered with enormous force in the course of time?

The human mind has already formed opinions about similar combinations: the people without livelihood and without awareness of their destiny with those who tolerate the yoke of despots.

Through the centuries justice has not been adverse, for their civic virtues, to the classic uncouth vengeance. Even though the tyrant fell low, your punishment approached bright personal conditions. Your valor and your passion have spread through three continents. Triumph comes from the fields and the living rooms; from the Frenchmen and from Cleopatra. Skilled in the sword, in the pen and in speech. The world could have been lost because of vengeance for the thoughtful and artistic personality that was destroyed and still changed over the homicide, the parricide: but the world knows too well that, on top of everything, the health of the people should be absolved of the remaining faults.

On the other hand, what stories can we lose to Radowitzky: what particular virtues, merits or morals have been hurt by his actions? If a visitor from Buenos Aires comes to a certain crossroads and upon finding themselves in front of a monument, asks about the qualities of his destination, how can a speaker respond? He can socialize with a soldier who has risen to a certain military rank, leaning on a saber and bending his neck, he who is in parliament on occasion, with a mob of firefighters... and at other times is in the Lorea plaza, in front of a public demonstration --- I would speak to him. And I would not do more if he was my blood relative.

Luckily they have not yet silenced in the Argentinian atmosphere the voices of Verela, Echeverría and Mármol against the tyranny, nor have the lights of Alberdi been completely eclipsed, and it is possible to remember that the start that reflects the constitution in the part that they give. Or they could impose on the citizens the right to take up arms to defend the constitutional mandates at various times, but they have violated the meaning of the mandates, that it is human life, by demanding the blood of those that try to conserve and increase public liberties.

In the time of the awkward and shameless tyrants, that have no more motive than riches, the populated countries of America are devastated, the men that live in this corner of the continent where democratic institutions struggle so that they do not become abysmal dictatorships, everybody, politicians, merchants and producers, should understand the historical transcendence of Radowitzky's work, that it was only one of the strong arms that the tyrant raised against the people, that without which it was possible for the institutions to survive during this awful time that has already become overrun by the dictators.

The environment was ideal for sustained propaganda and the forces were used in the free skirmished, we are doomed to undertake a decisive battle. It is impossible to postpone it longer without undermining what has already been done. It is the time of consequences and responsibility.

The freedom of Radowitzky encompasses the defense of the ideals of freedom and of those caught in the net of privilege.

When the committee that formed in Rosario for the purpose of this movement launched the general strike on November 14 (that was also sponsored by the committee of independent unions), we glimpsed the great actions that can move us to sacrifice ourselves as martyrs. Like us, many other institutions have adopted the cause, and we don't believe that there is anybody who could escape the commitment of this struggle for liberation.

The time until the date indicated is sufficient to cause agitation, or rather, to force decisions because minds are now awakened.

All the institutions, all the men who openly or privately have echoed the campaign for Radowitzky have given proof of the sincerity of their attitudes by responding to the call that came from Rosario's committees. This initiative belongs to not just those who began it, it was in the atmosphere and it belongs to everyone that has been a part of it.

However, we warn you that in order to create the initiative, the committee for Radowitzky from Buenos Aires should give precedence to all the entities capable of intervening in the fight, or if those are lacking, Rosario's committees, then Buenos Aires must not always be the driving mind and heart of the campaigns in the country.

To work, then, with idealist sincerity for the next battle!
