Pitzer College

Psychology 125

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience

Spring, 2011

Here's the most pertinent info--I'll discuss specific details in class.

Class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45 pm - 4:00 pm
All class meetings will be held in Broad Center 207

My OFFICE HOURS will be on:

Mondays from 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm

-- and --

Fridays from 10:30 am - 11:30 am

In addition, you can schedule a time to meet with me -- in fact, I'd actually prefer it if you'd make an appointment with me if you'd like to talk. Under most circumstances, I'll be in my office or lab quite a bit, so you can just drop on in.

We will use the following two books in this course; they should now be available in Huntley Bookstore:

Johnson, M.H. (2011).  Developmental cognitive neuroscience, (3rd ed.).  Malden, MA: Wiley-Blackwell.
Elman, J.L., Bates, E.A., Johnson, M.H., Karmiloff-Smith, A., Parisi, D., and Plunkett, K.  (1997).  Rethinking innateness: A connectionist perspective on development.  Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.

I'll also be using the following book in connection with our labs; it is not required reading, but you can check it out if you're interested:

Plunkett, K. and Elman, J.L. (1997).  Exercises in rethinking innateness: A handbook for connectionist simulations. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.

Any supplemental readings will be made available to you on Sakai.

A NOTE ABOUT ASSIGNMENTS: Lab write-ups will be due a week-and-a-half after we meet to talk the lab over (please see syllabus for lab write-up due dates). You should attempt to do the lab as soon as possible after our lab meeting, so that if things don't go as planned, you'll have time to come by and get help from me, and still be able to hand in the write-up on time.

Final papers will be due in class on Wednesday, May 4th.
