THE WORLD SINCE 1492

This course provides a historical-anthropological survey of humanity from roughly 1500ish to now. In our examination of this span of humanity’s existence, we focus on four themes:

·      the formation and effects of modern identities and social groupings, notably of race, nationality, ethnicity, and gender

·      the formation and effects of industrial capitalism

·      the formation and effects of states and resistance to states

·      the role of movement—of persons, things, practices, and ideas—in the shaping of these histories
