AA82/LGSC82/Soc82:

The Racial Politics of Teaching

Faculty Facilitators: Carmen Fought and Kathy Yep

DESCRIPTION:
In educational institutions, we often hear the terms diversity training, multiculturalism, bilingualism, cross-cultural competency, and zero tolerance.  These concepts point to the centrality of race as a social construction in schooling and education.  This class examines how race and ethnicity are defined in schooling from sociological, linguistic, and ethnic studies standpoints.  Specifically, we will discuss how race and ethnicity are constructed in schooling and ways teachers/educators may refine their pedagogies in relation to race and ethnicity. This class is based on a participatory education model and so your commitment to be an active contributor is essential to the learning process for all.  The readings are in a smaller quantity so students will take more time to read them closely, to engage with them, and to extrapolate from them. Please bring your reading to class in order to be able to refer to it during discussions.
