Class Definition of Diversity
• |
Because all individuals have various perceptions, values, and backgrounds, there is diversity. This is commonly recognized by the broad categories: gender, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, etc. However, even these categories can be defined by different societies in dissimilar ways, and broken down into different subgroups. In fact, "diversity" is a term that can become integrated into institutions and other social constructs. Diversity kindles the celebration of culture, yet it also sparks conflict within communities. Thus, it is the responsibility of the individual to share their ideas and experiences with a community. People should be empowered to share their voices so that others can evaluate their personal standards and viewpoints. Overall, diversity is the result of opening oneself to differences and broadening the perspectives of society. (Fall, 2006) |
