Media Studies 82: Fall 2003
Introduction to Video Production

Assignment #1 / One-take or in-camera edit video
DUE DATE: TUESDAY 9/23

Using only your camera, create a short (30 sec. -3 min. max) video. Your piece can be a one-take (turn the camera on, shoot, turn it off - voila, a video!) or an in camera-edited (a series of shoot in sequence) piece.

The topic of this assignment is to create a video poem:

_ You will create visual images to accompany a pre-existing poem, either one you have written yourself, or one by another author
_ Consider how you can translate the verbal and textual imagery of the poem into visual language.
_ Also consider the following issues: how will the visual and text-based images interact with each other in my video? Will I be illustrating the poem with video images, or will I be adding other layers of imagery to play off of the text? Can I create a dialogue between the image, sound, and text of the poem?

Process:

1. Find a short poem you like, or write one yourself for this assignment. Read it aloud and time it to make sure it is not too long;
2. A good approach is to break the poem down by line or by stanza, and create a series of images to go along with the text using a storyboard;
3. Assess your location, prop, crew, and equipment needs, then from it organize your shooting schedule;
4. Shoot your video poem —you can literally videotape yourself, use the camera as your "surrogate eye," shoot objects and/or people, etc.;
5. Your audio should be live and edited with the video - i.e. you or someone reading lines of the poem while the images are shot;
6. I will randomly assign the class into groups of 3-4 students. You are expected to work as a group to execute your videos. You may assist each other in shooting, lighting, props, etc. Each group will check out cameras and equipment as a group, so plan your shoots and coordinate your locations. Even though you will be working in groups, everyone must learn how to operate a video camera.
