Austerity protest: protest against austerity meansures that are implemented when a government cuts costs, often increasing prices on food, utilities, education or transportation, or increasing unemployment; likely stipulated by the IMF in exchange for a loan

6/16/92 India Nation-wide strike against IMF/WB reforms carried out by trade unions. 12 million participants. Peaceful strike, arrests were a "preventative measure." 1 union member killed, 1,000s arrested in Southern India.
July 1992 India All India Motor Transport Congress truck drivers strike IMF mandated toll to enter specific states. Strike lasted a week until government agreed to union's demand.
11/25/92 New Delhi, India 250,000-300,000 people protest, demanding end to austerity measures and foreign corporations direct investment in India. Estimated the biggest gathering of workers in post-independence India. Marked one-year anniversary of nationwide strikes. Organized by trade unions/confederations from: government, banks, insurance companies, railways and industrial sector.
12/8/92 Bangalore, India Hundreds of farmers of Karnataka State Farmers' Association demonstrate against GATT agreement to open up borders to seed production.  500 hundred storm Cargill Seeds India Ltd office burning files and seeds. Militant police response.

2003 Brazil Landless Workers Movement (MST) occupies Monsanto seed production facilities on three separate occasions. The workers were protesting the development of genetically modified (GM) seeds. GM foods, at the time, were illegal.
2003 Honduras Anti-IMF protests. Roads closed overnight due to burning barricades

March 2004 Near Buerarema, Brazil 150-450 members of the MST block a highway with tires and pieces of wood multiple times. The protesters also block train tracks. Over 33,000 families showed up in the state to push for land reform.

5/31/12 Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, India 18 hour strike against increase in price of diesel, kerosene and petroleum. Price increase is caused by the decrease in governemnt subsidies as a cost saving technique as India faces inflation and slow economic growth.
7/6/12 India National protests against increased price of diesel, kerosene and petroleum. Strike shut down roads, transportation and shops.
9/20/12 Hyderbad, Bangalore, New Dehli, India Tens of millions of protesters shut down schools, public transportation and businesses (everything from locally owned stores to US tech companies like Google). Protesters opposed 14%  hike in gasoline prices and the  governemnt's desiscion to allow direct foreign investment in the airline industry, multi-brand retaliers like Wal-Mart, the broadcasting industry and the increased privitization in other industries.
11/14/12 Athens, Greece 80,000 protest EU/IMF parliaments vote to keep the euro. 48-hour general strike. Protesters throw rocks and gasoline bombs. Police spray tear gas, stun grenades and use water cannons for the first time in years.
November 2012 Across Europe Millions in 23 different European countries protest unemployment and austerity measures imposed by the EU and the IMF. Some protests are in solidarity with other countries. 24-hour general strike in Spain and Portugal. Roads and subway blocked in Madrid, Spain. Flights delayed in Lisbon, Portugal. Trains stopped in Brussels, Belgium and France.  Police fired rubber bullets and used batons in Madrid, Spain where 34 were injured and 70 arrested.
