PERSONAL
Believe it or not, I carry a Brazilian passport and always wanted to be a professional soccer player. Unfortunately I was
always the starting bench-warmer in division III. In 1978 I played my violin in Avery Fisher
Hall. It was a Wednesday night and they could
not book anyone else. In 1988 I tried out for the US Olympic Tae Kwon Do team. I got my butt kicked.
In 1996 I completed the Boston
Marathon. My time was just over a year. I ran the first half in 1995 and the
second half in 1996. In 2003 I rode my bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise money for people with HIV/AIDS,
but I've never ridden my bike the 2 miles from my home to the office.
I also enjoy playing tennis, skiing,
eating at ethnic restaurants, watching Woody
Allen films, and going out for
ice cream. I have several scars from mountain
biking up in the Claremont Hills Wilderness
Park. I have been known to bake key lime pies, chocolate cheesecakes, and
fruit tarts. But I spend my free time mostly exploring the world with my son Chaska.

I used to be a resident tutor in economics at Leverett
House, a graduate affiliate of Silliman
College, and one of the first
residents of Random
Hall. I grew up in Free
Acres, New Jersey. But where am I really from?
